Shaun Lawrence Suzuki Cup

Hamilton’s Shaun Lawrence has come away from the opening round of the 2009
Suzuki Swift Sport Cup with a huge smile on his face following a fantastic podium
finish in Race Three at the last weekends meeting at Pukekohe Park Raceway.

“The whole weekend was just unbelievable, I just couldn’t be happier” explained a
smiling Lawrence. “Admittedly I’d hoped to qualify a little better for the opening race
but overall the weekend went completely to plan. We made plenty of set up changes
over the weekend which completely transformed the car” he added.

With an impressive field of sixteen cars taking to grid, Lawrence’s pre-race strategy
of keeping out of trouble saw him finish race one where he qualified, in eleventh
place. Race two saw the Kea Trailers Suzuki move up the field to eighth, and it was in
the reverse grid race three where everything came together for the rookie.

“After starting from tenth I was working my way up through the field and the car felt
awesome. The red flag came out for Scott Harrison’s crash on lap 8, by that time my
confidence in the car was good so I was able to push pretty hard as soon as the race
restarted. By the time the chequered flag came out we’d clawed our way up to third,
I just wish we had another few laps!” said Lawrence.

The weekends performance has unquestionably shown that the competitive streak
has passed from father to son, and father Graeme was there for the weekend to
mentor his son through his first run in the Suzuki. The team’s pre-event strategy
worked perfectly and the improvements made over the weekend will ensure that
the team head to Round Two full of confidence.

The Suzuki Swift Sport Cup now heads to Ruapuna Raceway in Christchurch for the
first of three consecutive rounds in the South Island, with Lawrence sitting sixth
overall in the Championship.
